Watch Emma Watson's video on feminism

Emma Watson's United Nations speech on gender equality became one of 2014's most-shared videos, drawing millions of views within days of its release and reigniting global conversation about feminism.
Watson, 24, delivered the address as UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, launching the HeForShe campaign—a solidarity movement that invites men to join the fight for gender equality. Her message was direct: feminism is not a women's issue, it is a human issue.
"I was appointed six months ago and the more I have spoken about feminism the more I have realized that fighting for women's rights has too often become synonymous with man-hating," Watson told the assembly. "If there is one thing I know for certain, it is that this has to stop."
The speech struck a chord because Watson confronted a stigma head-on. Many women, she noted, are reluctant to call themselves feminists for fear of being labeled extremist or aggressive. Watson reframed the question entirely: gender equality benefits everyone, men included. Men are imprisoned by rigid expectations of masculinity. Men die younger. Men are less likely to seek mental health help. These, too, are feminist issues.
HeForShe asks men to make a personal commitment—to call out sexism when they see it, to challenge the culture of silence. Within three days of the speech, over 100,000 men had signed the pledge online.
Watson credited her own privileged upbringing with opening her eyes—the same childhood opportunities given to her brother, the same encouragement from her parents. She was aware, even as a child actress, that the world did not always offer that equality to others.
The video's virality reflects genuine public appetite for a feminism that is inclusive rather than confrontational. Whether the HeForShe campaign translates into measurable policy change remains to be seen, but Watson's speech has undeniably broadened the conversation.
