Sarkozy has landed

French President Nicolas Sarkozy touched down in India in late 2010 for a state visit that carried both ceremonial and commercial weight. France and India had maintained a warm strategic partnership for decades — built partly on defense sales, partly on nuclear cooperation, and partly on a shared French appreciation for the complexity and scale of Indian civilization that set Paris apart from more transactional Western capitals.
The visit came as India was cementing its status as one of the world's most consequential emerging economies, and European leaders were increasingly competing for influence in New Delhi's corridors of power. Sarkozy's trip was designed to advance several major French commercial interests, including aerospace contracts with Dassault — maker of the Rafale fighter jet — and nuclear energy agreements following the landmark India-US civil nuclear deal that had opened the door for international suppliers.
France had been among the first major Western powers to embrace India's de facto nuclear status, and Sarkozy sought to convert that goodwill into concrete deals. The Rafale aircraft competition, which would eventually consume Indian defense procurement discussions for years, was already in early stages.
Beyond commerce, Sarkozy used the visit for the kind of public diplomacy that state visits afford — speeches before the Indian parliament, cultural events, and the carefully choreographed imagery of two major democracies reaffirming ties. The visit coincided with France holding the G20 presidency, adding another layer of multilateral significance to the bilateral agenda.
