Must Read Kids' Books

Children's literature at its best does something that adult fiction rarely attempts: it treats genuinely difficult questions — loss, fear, injustice, the search for belonging — with an honesty that adults have often trained themselves to avoid. The books that endure across generations tend to be the ones that refused to condescend.

A few categories worth knowing for the holiday gift-giver who wants to put something genuinely worth reading into a child's hands:

For the youngest readers (3-6): Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak remains the standard — a book about anger, fantasy, and the comfort of home that children understand more directly than any adult interpretation suggests. Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown works on rhythms more than narrative, and those rhythms work.

For middle-grade readers (7-11): A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle handles concepts of good and evil, difference, and family with more sophistication than most books written for adults. Roald Dahl's catalog — Matilda, The BFG, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory — combines delight with a genuine understanding of what it feels like to be small in a world run by large, often unkind people.

For older children (12+): To Kill a Mockingbird and The Giver both belong in this category — books that ask children to grapple with social justice and ethical complexity in terms they can engage with.

The best gift, alongside any of these, is a parent or grandparent willing to read alongside and talk about what they find there.
