Meditation may or may not reduce heart attacks-but reduces stress for sure

A research controversy has erupted in the meditation community after a major journal delayed publication of a study examining meditation's effects on cardiovascular health, raising questions about the peer review process and about the claims being made by advocates for meditation-based interventions.
The underlying science on meditation and stress reduction is, at this point, reasonably well established. Multiple well-designed studies have demonstrated that regular meditation practice — particularly mindfulness-based interventions — produces measurable reductions in self-reported stress, decreases in cortisol levels, and improvements in markers of autonomic nervous system regulation. These findings are robust enough that many hospitals and medical practices have incorporated mindfulness programs into their standard care.
The more contested question is whether these stress-reduction effects translate into meaningful cardiovascular outcomes — fewer heart attacks, reduced blood pressure, longer life. Here the evidence is considerably more mixed. Some studies report positive associations; others find no significant effect once confounding variables are controlled for. The mechanisms by which reduced stress might protect the heart are plausible but the direct clinical evidence remains inconsistent.
What the journal delay controversy highlights is the degree to which meditation research operates in an environment where both advocates and skeptics have strong priors, and where preliminary positive findings receive disproportionate attention relative to null results or replications.
The practical takeaway is simpler than the research debate suggests. Meditation reliably reduces stress. Stress contributes to poor health outcomes. The case for regular meditation practice doesn't actually depend on whether it directly prevents heart attacks — the stress reduction is sufficient justification on its own.
