IIT Delhi to set up another campus in Haryana

The proposal to establish a new Indian Institute of Technology Delhi campus in Haryana reflected a broader expansion effort that had been underway across India's premier technical education system, as the government and institutions wrestled with the tension between maintaining the IITs' elite reputation and significantly expanding access to high-quality engineering education.

IIT Delhi, one of the oldest and most prestigious of the IITs, was considering Sonipat in Haryana as a location for the new campus — a site reasonably close to Delhi's National Capital Region that would allow some sharing of faculty resources and administrative infrastructure while creating additional capacity.

The IIT expansion question was genuinely complex. The existing IITs had their reputations built on a combination of rigorous selection (the JEE examination), concentrated resources, and the network effects of alumni who had succeeded in technology, business, and academia globally. Whether those qualities could be replicated or maintained across a substantially larger number of institutions and students was a serious question that expansion proponents and skeptics debated with real evidence on both sides.

The faculty question was particularly acute. The existing IITs were already understaffed relative to their sanctioned positions, with significant vacancies at the professor level. Creating new campuses or new capacity required either drawing faculty away from existing institutions — weakening them — or creating sufficient incentives to attract new entrants to the academic job market, which remained challenging given salary competition from the private sector.

The Haryana campus proposal was one node in this broader national conversation about whether excellence can be scaled, and at what cost to the original.
