America is the land of immigrants. Carnegie Corporation of New York has saluted the legacy of Andrew Carnegie and other immigrants every July 4th since 2006.

This year the corporation awarded thirty-eight immigrants from thirty countries. These immigrants are from all walks and fields ranging from medicine to music. Out of the thirty-eight honorees four are Indians.

The four Indians who have made the Indian community proud world wide are Preet Bharara US Attorney, Southern District of New York, Rakesh Khurana Dean of Harvard College, Madhulika Sikka Vice President, Executive Editor, .Mic (former executive editor of NPR) and Abraham Verghese, Physician, Professor, Author.

“Our founder, Andrew Carnegie, came to this country as the son of impoverished immigrants and grew up to become one of the greatest contributors to American industry and philanthropy,” said Vartan Gregorian, President of the Corporation.

“His devotion to US democracy stemmed from his conviction that the new infusion of talent that immigrants bring to our country keeps American society vibrant.”
