BMC demolishes illegal SRK ramp, may send him bill

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Sunday completed the demolition of a ramp illegally constructed by actor Shah Rukh Khan on a public road outside his bungalow Mannat in Bandra (West).
However, this may not be the end of Khan’s woes.
If the BMC goes by its rules, Khan may have to shell out the cost incurred by it for deployment of manpower and machinery to demolish the ramp.
As per the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1888, and the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966, the BMC can recover the cost it incurs from the owner on demolition of any illegal construction carried out by him.
Bills can be sent to the owner after the demolition is complete or the amount can also be recovered from the property tax payable by the owner to the civic body. However, civic officials remained non-committal about their plan to invoke these provisions to recover the cost from Khan. Officials also said they were yet to calculate the total cost of the demolition.
“We are yet to examine the costs and are studying the legal provisions. Decision on recovering the demolition costs from the owner is yet to be taken,” said Vijay Kamble, assistant municipal commissioner of H West ward under which Bandra (West) falls.
Locals had complained to BJP MP Poonam Mahajan that the 75-metre long ramp, used by the actor to park his vanity van, was illegal and obstructed the passage to Mount Mary Basilica church.
